Timber floors

Timber floors are common in older apartments and converted properties. They tend to be lighter, more flexible, and more prone to vibration. That means they often suffer badly from both creaking and sound transfer.

In this type of floor, lifting the existing boards is often the right starting point. Once open, the void between joists can be filled with acoustic mineral wool. This does not block sound on its own, but it helps reduce resonance inside the cavity and supports the overall system.

The weak point is often the perimeter. If the new floor is tightly fixed against surrounding walls, vibration can bypass the treatment. A proper perimeter isolation strip helps prevent that short circuit. It is a small detail, but it matters.

Concrete floors

Concrete is naturally denser than timber, so airborne sound performance may already be better. Impact noise is often the bigger complaint, especially in modern apartments with laminate, vinyl plank, or tile finishes.

In many cases, the solution for a concrete floor is to create a floating floor buildup. That usually means placing an acoustic layer over the slab, then adding a rigid deck above it. The surface floor finish then sits on top of that deck. The acoustic layer reduces impact vibration, while the added deck gives the floor stability and mass.

The trade-off is floor height. Even a slim system will raise the finished floor level, which can affect doors, thresholds, skirting, kitchens, and built-in furniture. There is no point pretending otherwise. Better acoustic performance usually requires more material depth, and more depth means more disruption during installation.

Why underlays alone often fall short

People often search for the thinnest, cheapest option first. That is understandable, especially in an occupied apartment. But if the expectation is meaningful soundproofing, a basic foam or rubber underlay under laminate is rarely enough.

Some acoustic underlays are useful as part of a broader buildup. They can reduce impact noise and improve floor feel underfoot. What they generally do not do is solve a serious noise problem by themselves. If the complaint is heavy footsteps, recurring furniture noise, or speech transfer to the unit below, the floor assembly usually needs more than a roll-out layer.

This is where honest advice matters. If the problem is mild, a thinner acoustic treatment may be enough to improve comfort. If the problem is severe, especially in older buildings with lightweight construction, you may need a more involved floor system or even treatment to the ceiling below as well.

The best floor finish depends on the noise problem

The finish on top of the soundproofing system has a real effect on results. Carpet with a quality acoustic underlay is still one of the most forgiving choices for impact noise. It absorbs footfall well and reduces the sharpness of movement sounds.

Hard finishes such as engineered wood, laminate, LVT, or tile are less forgiving. They can still be used, but the floor buildup underneath has to do more work. Some finishes also have manufacturer requirements for rigidity and moisture control, so the acoustic system must be compatible with the intended floor finish.

If that is happening, upgrading the floor alone may improve the situation without fully solving it.
